Spotlight Athlete

Congrats Jackie on being our next Athlete in the Spotlight

When did you start doing CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in September of 2014.

What is your favorite WOD/Type of WOD?
I really like Hero WODs, especially when they incorporate body-weight movements and running.

What is your least favorite WOD/Type of WOD?
Any WOD with rowing is definitely not a favorite of mine!

Tell us a little bit about yourself/yourselves (family, job, sports, military, interests, etc.)
I’m originally from Long Island, but have been living in MD for the past 6 years.  My husband, Chris, and I are approaching 10 years of marriage, and CrossFit has become a huge part of our life together.  I am a stay-at-home-mom to our 3 children, who aspire to be CrossFit kids!

What type of exercise or activities (if any) were you doing before CrossFit?
I was an athlete most of my life, and thrived on team sports.  I never realized how much I relied on my teammates and coaches to motivate me until I graduated college and had to exercise on my own.  I went about 10 years with minimal fitness activity because I was never motivated to work out alone in a typical gym.  Then, I finally decided to try CrossFit.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?
After having 3 children in 4 years, I was eager to get fit.  I wanted to get strong, get lean, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.  When I first joined, I was both intimidated and inspired by the fitness level of my new coaches and teammates.  The WOD on my very first day had handstand push-ups.  I was amazed as I watched some people do them with ease, and I couldn’t imagine ever being able to do ONE.  The kipping pull-up was another movement that had me in awe.  I suddenly had some new goals…

Have you achieved any of those goals?
YES!  I have far exceeded most of the goals I’ve set for myself throughout the past 2 years, and I am constantly setting new goals as I get stronger.  My most recent accomplishment was finally linking my double-unders.  My new goals are butterfly pull-ups and working to convert my not-so-pretty strict bar muscle-up to beautiful kipping one!

Has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym (Community, Friends, etc)?
Absolutely!  I have gotten to know so many incredible people at Baydog, and I love the camaraderie at our box.  Additionally, I now enjoy dropping in for classes at other boxes when travelling.  The entire CrossFit community is welcoming, and it’s always fun to learn from new coaches and work out alongside new athletes.

Something you might not know about me/us is…
I have a passion for kitchen design, and hope to make it my career in the future.
